Chapter Four
ALL MY LIFE I HAD DEALT with feeling like I was missing a big piece of who I was until Iâd joined Airi Moon. Recognized for my talent, the real woman I was shined through. I didnât have to pretend. Now, I was the woman that Press didnât want anymore. I was the woman he pretended to want. The truth stuck in my throat, tears burned at the back of my eyelids. I was suffocating.
How could you let this happen? I asked myself as I hastily skimmed back into the black dress and stuffed my panties into my purse.
âItâs not that simple, Play,â Press was saying. âThings have changed.â
âUh huh. I can see that.â
âWhatâs that supposed to mean?â
I glared at him. âI, a woman not known for getting attached or being commitment-minded, do the impossible and think I could be in a commitment with you and you would want the same thing. What was I thinking? Itâs not every day that I go around telling a man that I love him. Itâs not every day that I think, hmmm, maybe Iâd want to give up the same ole same ole and take a risk with a man who makes me feelââ I closed my eyes, ââamazing. If I had known that you wanted out, I wouldnât have said a damn thing to you at all. You can let me out of this limo. Iâll find a cab back to the hotel.â
âSo, youâre just going to run away without letting me explain?â He frowned, folding his hands together.
I could hear the disapproval in his deep voice. I was sick of other people trying to tell me what was good in their sights. As far as I was concerned everyone could put on some damn shades because I was done! âI think the way you are acting is answer enough, donât you?â
He nodded, his jaw set in a firm line. âSo be it, Play. Everything has to be your way.â Pushing the intercom, he instructed his driver to turn the limo around and head back to the hotel.
âAre you trying to put this off on me?â
Press turned to look at me. âFrom the moment I met you, youâve had this fucking iceberg on your shoulder, and Iâve been trying to chip away at it. I know what your background is, Play. Iâve read the articles. I pay attention. What would make you think that I wouldnât understand just how much it hurts to feel judged, weighted, and measured because of where you come from? Do you know how tiring it is to wonder if someone wants you for you or for the money attached to your name?â
I tried to swallow the lump in my throat. I hadnât thought a person in Prestonâs standing would have that issue. âYou say you know what itâs like, but you truly donât know what itâs like.â
âThatâs it, try to keep yourself on that damn high horse your ass is going to end up falling off of.
